Pro Evo vs FIFA is one of the most publicised console bouts of our time and, as is well documented, we have had a clear winner over the past few years. Well, in a bid to relinquish FIFA's market stranglehold, Konami have now released the mobile version of their footy rep and it seems that perhaps EA haven't got it all their way this time. With FIFA 10 being released for mobiles across the country a good few months before Pro Evo 2010, it could be argued that Konami have had time to think about the task at hand and analyse the opposition before unleashing their beast. If this was their plan, not only is it a flipping clever one, it is also one that may have just proved very fruitful.
As with its console upscaling, Pro Evo 2010 does not feature official league licences for all teams included in the game meaning made up team names and players are a constant. However the plus side of having licensed foreign teams and full access to the Champions League and Europa League licences does soften the blow somewhat. In terms of game modes we have all the usual suspects in this version of the title. Your classic league mode remains, of which there are four to choose from. English League, Ligue 1, Spanish League and Italian League are all available, some with official licences and some without. Multiplayer is also an option here with online play apparent and the Changing Room option opens up yet more doors.
Within this mode you can access trophies that you have won as well as challenges that you have unlocked. Performing different feats from match to match will unlock such challenges as 'Fastest Goal Scored' and 'Free Kick Score' just to place some added spice into you sometimes repetitive back-to-back match season mode. More entertaining still is the Mission Mode that entails the completion of set objectives across a total of five missions.
No matter which mode you enter upon your first visit to the game, you are thrown straight in with a tutorial mode. In order to control player direction you can use the arrow buttons/stick on your phone or alternatively the numbers relevant to the direction in which you want to move. The centre button acts as the pass button which, if you hold down for a longer amount of time will perform a long pass. The hash and star buttons can be used to perform a through ball and the most important button is 0, which allows you to shoot. In terms of defending the centre button closes down players and tackles. Right, that's the facts out of the way but what is of real interest here is, do the controls actually work? Well the overall conclusion is, yes. The main issue you will find is sprinting which is controlled by double tapping the direction in which you wish to go. Invariably though, it is slow to react and can lead to the accidental pressing of the pass button, resulting in premature loss of the ball.
PES 2010 is a well polished mobile footy title. The movement is as smooth as it can be using standard mobiles' limited capabilities and the control scheme allows you to do a capable job on the pitch whilst remaining user-friendly. It really does take the series back to the good old SNES days of ISS and for that reason it demands praise. Is it better than FIFA 10 mobile? Overall yes, when considering game play and the vast amount of options the title delivers.
