Now, we all like a nice puzzle game, don't we? And if you don't, just pretend that you do for the course of this review, because it'll make things much easier. With so many of them being variations on a similar theme, it's always pleasant when something a little different comes along.
Diamond Tumble provides short puzzle levels that will get you thinking. Sparing you the whole back-story involving bejewelled monkeys and statues, the main aim is retrieve diamonds from the top of stone towers by using a pick-axe to chip away the stone blocks. Ideally, you'll want to chip away as few blocks as possible to stand a chance of gaining a gold medal.
Level completion only counts if the diamond falls into the vat below the towers (no real explanation is given as to what's in it - could it be acid, water, maybe even chip fat?), so that your monkey allies can retrieve it. If the diamond fails to land in the vat, you'll have to try again.
While you can take as many moves as you like to finish the level, the more you do take, the greater the chance is that you'll wind up not getting a medal at all. Therefore, a spot of meticulous planning and careful thought is required if you want gold medals across the board - there's no limit, so you can head-scratch and chin-stroke as much as you want. Of course, if you get to the point where you just can see how you could possibly get that medal, you can always move on and return to the level at a later date to try again.
In addition to the main story mode, there's the Puzzle mode, which is another means of letting you replay the various levels in the game. The mode is locked to begin, but once you complete all of the levels in a sub-section of story, they'll then be opened up in here. In all, there are 90 levels to complete in the game, which should keep you occupied for a fair while. Doing them all again in puzzle mode could then double your play time!
Another reason to keep you playing is the Relic Gallery, which works as Diamond Tumble's equivalent of achievements. As you perform certain tasks throughout the game, these will be unlocked and available for you to view from the main menu. Nothing special, but anything that can provide additional replay value should be viewed as a positive.
As mentioned, the actual story itself is about 90 pence short of a pound, and the theme music seems oddly sinister, considering the light-hearted nature of the game. The graphics are fairly good though, with a nice, cartoonish feel, and cool animation of your vehicle driving between the levels, with monkeys hanging off it (everything's better with the, don'tcha know?).
On occasion, you might find yourself absolutely baffled as to how you can possibly complete a level within the gold medal allowance, but eventually the head-scratching turns to forehead-slapping, as you work out the foolproof methods. Besides, who wants to get everything right first time anyway?
