Noel Edmonds returns to mobile phones with a brand new edition of Deal or No Deal. EA have now taken over the publishing duties from Gameloft, and have managed to provide a far more substantial gaming experience for your money.
The new Deal or No Deal experience gives you more to do than just playing the game, and as such gives a greater representation of the way the TV show works. For the main mode of play, you select your character from the 22 available, give them a name and pick their lucky charm, before taking your place on Contestant's Row.
Following this, just like in real life, you have to wait for your name to be randomly selected as the chosen contestant for the day. If it isn't, you get to watch one of the other contestants have their shot at winning some cash, offering them advice when they're deciding whether or not to make a deal with the Banker, and even opening your box at the time when they request it.
Eventually, the time will come when your name is the one selected, and you'll have your opportunity to play the game. After randomly being assigned a box, you must then start picking off the rest of them to eliminate the amount within. At the end of each round, the banker will call in with his offer.
It's here where the main mode of play differs from the original version, and shows even more authenticity. Rather than just throw you straight to the question of "Deal or No Deal", you get a couple of other options, including a chance to scan the board to see what amounts are remaining (which will help give you a better idea of whether you're getting a good deal). You can also ask for advice, at which point one of the other contestants, seemingly picked at random, will state whether or not they think you should take a deal or plod onwards.
When you've heard what they have to say, and taken enough looks at the board, you can tell Noel that you're ready for the question, and answer accordingly. Even if you choose to take the deal, the game still lets you carry on opening the remaining boxes to see if you did make the right choice, unlike some previous versions, which would fast track you to the end. You'll win if the amount in your box was bigger than the banker's best office, provided you didn't deal, or if the amount in the box was less than any deal you accepted.
Should you not want to watch or help other people playing, you can choose the Quick Play option, which puts you straight into the action as the player, without having to wait for your name to be called.
A new mode for mobiles (which has previously featured in a DS version of the game) is the "Be The Banker" mode. In this, you get to take on the role of the mysterious banker, who maintains his anonymity on the other end of a telephone line. For this mode, you watch a CPU controlled player battle through the rounds, and then select the amount you want to offer them manually. Obviously, the aim here is to make them take less than they actually have in their box.
It's a shame that there's no single-phone multiplayer mode for this game, as it would be a lot more fun competing against another human, rather than trying to outfox a circuit board, but it is fairly enjoyable. However, once the player has accepted a Deal, the remaining "would-be" offers are chosen by the CPU instead, making you no more than a spectator that presses a button to move things on.
It's great to see Deal or No Deal back on mobiles, especially as it's the sort of game that you can load up and breeze through in short bursts, and then want to do the same over and over again. This EA version truly provides the closest representation to the TV version yet, and is sure to please fans of the show. Of course, it would be ten times better if you actually did win the money involved!
